Born in Slutsk, Belarus, in 1975, Aleksei Kazantsev currently lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. He studied at the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics from 1992 to 1997, later completed photography studies at SCVO Nijverheidsschool Fotografie in Antwerp between 2006 and 2011, and graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp (KASKA) in 2019 with a degree in Fine Arts.
The beginning and end of consciousness. The formation and dissolution of memory—and the things that lie between them, like nightmares of a midsummer afternoon—these are what I think about.
A back soaked through; that haze in which one cannot tell whether it is a spring dream or a nightmare. I confess to the dreadful nostalgias that have already passed.
Aleksei Kazantsev (Slutsk, Belarus, 1975) connects such images as though following the logic of a dream, attempting a refusal of cognitive classification.
It is, equally, a premonition of a fearful future.
